Background of the Study

Preterm birth complications are among the leading causes of neonatal mortality worldwide, particularly in low-resource settings where specialized neonatal care is limited (WHO, 2024). Nurses play a crucial role in preterm care, providing essential interventions such as thermoregulation support, feeding assistance, and infection prevention (UNICEF, 2024). However, their attitudes toward preterm care can significantly influence the quality of care and outcomes for premature infants (Adebayo et al., 2024).

Positive attitudes among nurses can enhance adherence to best practices in preterm care, while negative attitudes—often influenced by workload, lack of training, or emotional distress—may result in suboptimal care (Oladele et al., 2024). In Nigeria, particularly in hospitals like Federal Medical Centre, Minna, nurses' perceptions of preterm care remain underexplored, making it necessary to evaluate their attitudes and identify areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

Despite advancements in neonatal care, preterm infant mortality remains high in many Nigerian hospitals (Ibrahim & Hassan, 2024). One critical but often overlooked factor is the attitude of nurses toward preterm care, which affects their willingness to provide quality, evidence-based interventions (Bello & Musa, 2024).

Inadequate training, emotional fatigue, and resource constraints may contribute to negative attitudes, leading to inconsistent or insufficient care for preterm infants (Muhammad et al., 2024). Evaluating nurses' attitudes at Federal Medical Centre, Minna, will provide insights into existing challenges and inform strategies to improve preterm care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses' attitudes toward preterm care at Federal Medical Centre, Minna.
  2. To identify factors influencing nurses' perceptions of preterm care.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving nurses’ attitudes and competence in preterm care.

Research Questions

  1. What are nurses’ attitudes toward preterm care at Federal Medical Centre, Minna?
  2. What factors contribute to positive or negative attitudes among nurses regarding preterm care?
  3. How can nurses’ attitudes toward preterm care be improved?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Minna, have varying attitudes toward preterm care.
  2. Workload, training opportunities, and emotional exhaustion significantly influence nurses’ perceptions of preterm care.
  3. Targeted training programs can improve nurses’ attitudes toward preterm care.

Definitions of Terms

  • Preterm Care: Medical and nursing interventions provided to infants born before 37 weeks of gestation.
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): A specialized unit for the care of preterm and critically ill newborns.
